Saturday — Arrival at Mexico City International Airport. Hotel transfer and check-in. Rest and settle in. Overnight in Mexico City.
Mexico City sits at 2,240 meters above sea level. Give your body a night to adjust. The journey ahead is worth arriving fully present for.
Sunday — Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe — Mexico’s supreme pilgrimage destination. Teotihuacán: the Temple of Quetzalcóatl (the Feathered Serpent), the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, the Causeway of the Dead. Obsidian artisan workshop. Overnight in Mexico City.
Quetzalcóatl — the Feathered Serpent — represents the union of earth and sky, body and spirit. His temple at Teotihuacán is covered in serpent heads with shells representing Venus. A god of transformation.
Monday — Flight to Villahermosa (not included — book separately). Guide reception at hotel. Transfer to Palenque through lush tropical landscape. Check-in and rest. Overnight in Palenque.
The flight from Mexico’s high plateau to Palenque’s jungle is a transition between two Mexicos — the mountain and the tropical. Both are ancient. Both are profound.
Tuesday — Palenque archaeological zone — Temple of the Inscriptions, the Royal Palace, the Temple of the Cross, with jungle encroaching on all sides and howler monkeys in the canopy. Afternoon drive to Campeche — panoramic tour of the UNESCO-listed walled colonial city. Overnight in Campeche.
Campeche’s walls were built in the 17th century to defend against pirates. Today they cradle one of Mexico’s most beautifully preserved colonial cities. Walk the ramparts at sunset.
Wednesday — Uxmal archaeological zone — the extraordinary Pyramid of the Magician, the Nunnery Quadrangle with its intricately carved Puuc-style facades. Continue to Mérida — ‘The White City’ — for a panoramic city tour. Overnight in Mérida.
The Pyramid of the Magician was said to have been built in a single night by a sorcerer’s child. Its oval base is unique in the Maya world. Myth always gestures toward something real.
Thursday — Chichén Itzá — one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World. The Temple of Kukulcán, the Sacred Cenote, the Great Ball Court. Swim at Ik Kil cenote — a sacred natural sinkhole with vines cascading from its circular rim into crystalline waters 26 meters below. Arrive in Cancún/Riviera Maya. Overnight in Cancún.
Ik Kil cenote was used by the Maya for sacred offerings and ceremony. Swimming in its waters today connects you to thousands of years of human gratitude toward the Earth’s hidden depths.
Friday — Free day. Optional excursions: Isla Mujeres (first point of sunrise in Mexico), Xcaret eco-archaeological park, Tulum + Xel-Há lagoon snorkeling, or Cozumel island with its world-class coral reef.
Vitalis Quest recommends Isla Mujeres for those seeking stillness, and Tulum for those still processing the archaeology. The Caribbean accepts whatever you need from it.
Saturday — Breakfast at hotel. Airport transfer and departure.
Eight days. Six UNESCO sites. One unbroken Maya world. You have walked the same ground that millions walked before you. That shared human thread is the greatest souvenir.
